In 1999 I was in St. Louis, delivering flowers, taking classes, and driving to Chicago on the weekends for shows. I lived in a little room in a little house, I had car speakers hooked up to a Aiwa amp I found on the sidewalk during moving season, and this old "portable" Mac that weighed 14 pounds. Children laughed and screamed and cried in the park next door. It got hot, and then cold, and then hot again.
My uncle come to town and we had lunch. He said that he was sick of his job and his girlfriend demanded that they move to California. He was on his way there to buy a condo. He was, however, incapable of selling the house he loved in Rhode Island. He asked if I would live in it for as long as he was in California, which, he prediced, would likely be the rest of his natural life. I agreed.
Greenfield, Rhode Island, I found, is an idyllic paradise. We are a small town. We love music, art, movies, writing and reading, the humanities, science, friendship, and frequent meals of Fishburger with sweet potato fries. We escape the notice of almost everyone, but we don't often notice them either. I made a website after living in Greenfield for some time - although everyone seemed to always know what was going on, and made good use of the traditional telephone method of communication, I thought it would be worth setting down a record of the current events of the Greenfield scene on the internet. Not everyone knows everyone, I thought, but perhaps they could be made to. We will somehow have an official status that we previously did not. I had high hopes that have yet to be dashed: Record labels will discover our bands! Our writers will publish! Our artists will be recieved in New York City with open arms! Tourists will visit us!
Greenfield City Council was informed of my efforts and awared me a grant to keep the site running. My kindest thnks to them; I hope I will not disappoint. my whole world fell apart and I made a new one.
